A cytological study of the O5 chromosomal inversion of Drosophila subobscura (Diptera, Drosophilidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mestres,Francesc; Figueras,Maria Teresa; Serra,Luís.
The O5 chromosomal inversion has been a cornerstone for understanding different aspects of the American colonization by Drosophila subobscura. To obtain more information of this evolutionary event it is important to know the pattern of bands of this inversion in detail. Comparing this pattern with that of D. melanogaster it is possible to predict which genes are located inside or close to the O5 inversion and use them as genetic markers. In this study, the complete band pattern of the O5 inversion is presented. Furthermore, the most important genes located inside it have been predicted. Finally, a constriction located close to the proximal breakage point of the O5 inversion has been observed many times and its possible genetic significance is discussed.

Adult and larval traits as determinants of geographic range size among tropical reef fishes ArchiMer
Luiz, Osmar J.; Allen, Andrew P.; Robertson, D. Ross; Floeter, Sergio R.; Kulbicki, Michel; Vigliola, Laurent; Becheler, Ronan; Madin, Joshua S..
Most marine organisms disperse via ocean currents as larvae, so it is often assumed that larval-stage duration is the primary determinant of geographic range size. However, empirical tests of this relationship have yielded mixed results, and alternative hypotheses have rarely been considered. Here we assess the relative influence of adult and larval-traits on geographic range size using a global dataset encompassing 590 species of tropical reef fishes in 47 families, the largest compilation of such data to date for any marine group. We analyze this database using linear mixed-effect models to control for phylogeny and geographical limits on range size. Our analysis indicates that three adult traits likely to affect the capacity of new colonizers to survive...

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitansarcB influences hydrophobic properties, biofilm formation and adhesion to hydroxyapatite BJM
Longo,PL; Ota-Tsuzuki,C; Nunes,ACR; Fernandes,BL; Mintz,K; Fives-Taylor,P; Mayer,MPA.
The regulation of gene expression in the oral pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is still not fully elucidated. ArcAB is a two-component system which allows facultative anaerobic bacteria to sense various respiratory growth conditions and adapt their gene expression accordingly. This study investigated in A. actinomycetemcomitans the role of arcB on the regulation of biofilm formation, adhesion to saliva coated hydroxyapatite (SHA) and the hydrophobic properties of the cell. These phenotypic traits were determined for an A. actinomycetemcomitansarcB deficient type and a wild type strain. Differences in hydrophobic properties were shown at early and late exponential growth phases under microaerobic incubation and at late exponential phase under...

An epidemiological study of Haemophilus influenzae at a Brazilian day care center BJID
Bonifácio da Silva,M.E.; Marin,J.M..
Day care centers are a relatively new phenomenon in Brazil that bring together large numbers of young children susceptible to contagious diseases. Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) is an important infection in the age range of those attending day care centers. In the present study, the carriage rate of Haemophilus influenzae was identified in 38 day care attendees age 6 to 37 months, and 23 staff members, at a day care center in Ribeirão Preto-São Paulo, in 1997. To identify the carriers, two nasopharyngeal swabs were collected; one in July and one in December. The rate of H. influenzae carriers among the children was 77%. Only 2 of 23 staff members (9%) had Hi. Among the children, there were 58 isolates in the two sampling periods; 6 of the Hi were serotype b,...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and dark septate fungi in plants associated with aquatic environments Acta Botanica
Marins,Josy Fraccaro de; Carrenho,Rosilaine.
ABSTRACT There have been several reports of symbionts in the roots of plants that live in aquatic environments. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are the most common microsymbionts and possibly recolonized the aquatic environment together with plants; however, their functions and the extent of their benefits are unclear. Furthermore, the presence of other groups of fungi, such as dark septate fungi (DSF), with functions supposedly analogous to those of mycorrhizal fungi, has also been reported. The present work provides a compilation of data regarding the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae in plants from, or under the influence of, aquatic environments, and co-colonization by AMF and DSF. Forty species of non-vascular plants, ferns, fern allies, and...

Aspects morphologiques et dynamiques de constructions de l'Annelide polychete Sabellaria alveolata (Linne). ArchiMer
Gruet, Yves.
The study is illustrated by photographs, consideration being given to the stages in the establishment of colonies on shells and pebbles. Stages of implantation and the types of construction thereby formed are described, and the process of growth in height examined. Implantation of other individuals, hydrodynamics, tube density, temperature and age or average sizes of the population are thought to influence this growth. The surface area occupied by the constructions may be extended by colonization of pebby or shelly areas or by transportation of parts broken away. Destruction and death of the constructions may be extended by colonization of pebby or shelly areas the constructions is described. It was found that the reefs underwent a particular mode of...

Aves de três remanescentes florestais do norte do Estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil, com sugestões para a conservação e manejo Zoologia
Bornschein,Marcos Ricardo; Reinert,Bianca Luiza.
One hundred eighty species in a preliminary inventory were identified. From these, 166 were in an area of 832.5 ha (Mata São Francisco State Park), 84 in another of 9.7 ha (Manoel Júlio de Almeida Municipal Forest) and 99 in the third remnant, briefly sampled, of 218 ha (Mata São Paulo). Comparing these numbers to inventories of nearby sites was considered that the larger area is poor in number of bird species, and believe this to be mainly due to the high degree of environmental degradation. Was considered that the smaller area is rich in birds, but its proximity (375 meters) to the third remnant certainly exeits strong influence. This paper presents the list of birds by site and with their relative frequency of occurrence. A new record for Paraná...

Bacterial colonization of winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus fed live feed enriched with three different commercial diets ArchiMer
Seychelles, L. H.; Audet, C.; Tremblay, R.; Lemarchand, K.; Pernet, Fabrice.
The proliferation of bacteria in intensive aquaculture systems may be responsible for poor growth and mass mortality of marine fish larvae. Essential fatty acids provided in the diet could protect larvae by modulation of the immune response via arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus larvae were fed rotifers Brachionus plicatilis enriched with three commercial diets containing different fatty acid profiles. Bacterial colonization on the gills and skin and in the intestinal lumen was evaluated at the end of the rotifer feeding period (day 26), and growth was surveyed until metamorphosis. At 26 days post hatching, larvae fed rotifers containing the higher AA content and with a higher...

Colonização de clareiras naturais na floresta atlântica no sudeste do Brasil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Tabarelli,Marcelo; Mantovani,Waldir.

Colonization of artificial substrata by teredinid larvae released from a previously infested focus at Ilha Grande Bay, RJ BABT
Varotto,Ricardo Silva; Barreto,Cristine Costa.
The colonization pattern of wooden panels by teredinid larvae released from a previously infested focus was investigated. Panels were placed at different distances (1, 10, 20m) and in different directions from the focus. The colonization experiment took place at Parcel do Aleijado, Ilha Grande Bay, RJ. The focus remained immersed in nearly surface water, by the coast, during three months for infestation by teredinids. After this period, it was transferred to the study site. The infested focus and colonization panels remained in water, 10m deep, for three months more. Total density and density of the dominant species were considered for each group of panels. Five teredinid species were found: Bankia fimbriatula, Bankia gouldi, Lyrodus floridanus, Lyrodus...

Colonization of benthic organisms on different artificial substratum in Ilha Grande bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BABT
Azevedo,Flávia Beatriz Beserra; Carloni,Giuliano Guilherme; Carvalheira,Lucia Verçosa.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of three different types of artificial substrates - concrete, metal and rubber - on the colonization of benthic organisms, using a structure called Multiple Disc Sampling Apparatus or MDSA. The results confirmed the hypothesis that the communities of incrusting invertebrates have preferences in relation to the type and orientation of the substratum to be colonized. Concrete and rubber, rougher surfaces, were more attractive to the organisms than the metal used. The orientation also had big influence because of the sedimentation that probably acted on the superior face of the materials, hindered the colonization.

Colonization of plant substrates at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps in the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean and occurrence of symbiont-related bacteria ArchiMer
Szafranski, Kamil M.; Deschamps, Philippe; Cunha, Marina R.; Gaudron, Sylvie M.; Duperron, Sebastien.
Reducing conditions with elevated sulfide and methane concentrations in ecosystems such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps or organic falls, are suitable for chemosynthetic primary production. Understanding processes driving bacterial diversity, colonization and dispersal is of prime importance for deep-sea microbial ecology. This study provides a detailed characterization of bacterial assemblages colonizing plant-derived substrates using a standardized approach over a geographic area spanning the North-East Atlantic and Mediterranean. Wood and alfalfa substrates in colonization devices were deployed for different periods at 8 deep-sea chemosynthesis-based sites in four distinct geographic areas. Pyrosequencing of a fragment of the 16S rRNA-encoding gene...

Colonization of synthetic sponges at the deep-sea Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge): a first insight ArchiMer
Baldrighi, Elisa; Zeppilli, Daniela; Crespin, Rosalie; Chauvaud, Pierre; Pradillon, Florence; Sarrazin, Jozee.
The main objective of the present study was to investigate invertebrate colonization processes at deep-sea hydrothermal vents in response to environmental factors and to the presence of complex artificial substrata (i.e., synthetic sponges). We set out a pilot experiment at 1700 m depth on the Lucky Strike vent field (Eiffel Tower, Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Synthetic sponges were deployed in 2011 at five sites along a gradient of hydrothermal activity and were recovered in 2013, and the composition of macro- and meiofauna was assessed on four of them. The influence of temperature and fluid inputs on colonizer faunal abundance and diversity was analyzed. Faunal abundance and diversity decreased with increasing distance from vent emission. The colonizers were...

Colonization of the Corumbá Reservoir (Corumbá River, Paraná River Basin, Goiás State, Brazil) by the "lambari" Astyanax altiparanae (Tetragonopterinae; Characidae) BABT
Dias,Rosa Maria; Bailly,Dayani; Antônio,Rosimeire Ribeiro; Suzuki,Harumi Irene; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
This work aimed to determine which population features were important to the colonization process of Astyanax altiparanae in the Corumbá Reservoir. The species presented wide spatial-temporal distribution, caught in all months and sites. Higher CPE values were recorded upstream from the reservoir during the filling phase. In this phase, reproductive activity was intense upstream and moderate in the tributaries. However, a fall in abundance of juveniles was observed after the formation of the reservoir. Among the most relevant population features to grant a successful colonization were wide geographic distribution, ability to occupy and spawn in lentic habitats and feeding flexibility.

Colonization-related functional traits of plants in a 50-hectare plot of secondary tropical forest Acta Botanica
Candido,Helder Marcos Nunes; Miazaki,Ângela; Pontara,Vanessa; Bueno,Marcelo Leandro; Solar,Ricardo; Gastauer,Markus; Meira-Neto,João Augusto Alves.
ABSTRACT The growth-survival trade-off hypothesis states that functional traits of stem, wood, leaves and fruits govern acquisitive and conservative strategies of plant species that grow/survive differently in forests. We aimed to determine whether heterogeneity during the colonization of a secondary Atlantic Forest fragment causes differences in colonization-related traits and determines taxonomic composition of subplots. A total of 5,078 subplots were censused with leaf and fruit traits and height measurements being determined for each tree of each species, and with averaged-abundance-weighted values calculated for each subplot. A dendrogram was generated from the taxonomic composition of subplots using Sorensen similarity and UPGMA clustering. A total...

ABSTRACT The use of dark septate fungi (DSE) to promote plant growth can be beneficial to agriculture, and these organisms are important allies in the search for sustainable agriculture practices. This study investigates the contribution of dark septate fungi to the absorption of nutrients by rice plants and their ensuing growth. Four dark septate fungi isolates that were identified by Internal transcribed spacer phylogeny were inoculated in rice seeds (Cv. Piauí). The resulting root colonization was estimated and the kinetic parameters Vmax and Km were calculated from the nitrate contents of the nutrient solution. The macronutrient levels in the shoots, and the NO3--N, NH4+-N, free amino-N and soluble sugars in the roots, sheathes and leaves were...
